Understanding Chain of Custody and Why Certification Matters

Group Energy supports Porta Products in maintaining PEFC and FSC Chain of Custody certifications, ensuring traceable, responsibly sourced timber and compliance with evolving regulations.
Understanding Chain of Custody and Why Certification Matters

In a time where transparency, sustainability, and ethical sourcing are at the forefront of people's minds, customers expect more than just a quality product. They expect proof of where it came from, how it was made, and that no harm was done to people or the planet along the way. This is where Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification plays a critical role. Here at Group Energy, we assist Porta Products Pty Ltd in maintaining their PEFC and FSC Chain of Custody certifications.

What is Chain of Custody?

Chain of Custody is the documented journey that certified timber (or other forest-based materials) takes from harvest to the final customer. The forest where the timber is sourced must have Forest Management certification from the Country of Origin's certifying body in the case of PEFC, or from FSC in the case of FSC chain of custody.

This means tracking every step, from the responsibly managed forest or recycled source, through processing, manufacturing, and distribution, to ensure that the certified content is verified at every stage.

A PEFC or FSC CoC means that every time there is a change in ownership of PEFC- or FSC-certified materials, there is a system in place to ensure those materials remain traceable and that claims can be independently verified. Each link in the supply chain must maintain this rigorous process to preserve the credibility of the certification.

How CoC Works

Achieving and maintaining CoC certification requires a company to:

  • Maintain documented procedures to track certified inputs.
  • Keep certified materials separate or control mixing under approved percentage-based systems.
  • Retain purchase, sales, and production records for audit verification.
  • Train staff to follow PEFC and FSC requirements.
  • Undergo independent third-party audits to ensure compliance.

Why This Matters in Today's Market

Today's consumers are more informed and value-driven than ever before. Research shows that people increasingly want to know that the products they buy are sourced sustainably, support ethical labour practices, and are free from modern day slavery.

CoC certification gives our customers that assurance. PEFC and FSC standards not only cover sustainable forest management but also require compliance with ethical labour principles, including the prohibition of forced and child labour. This means Porta Products Pty Ltd's products meet both environmental and social responsibility benchmarks, a combination that matters deeply to modern buyers.

The global timber supply chain is also under increasing scrutiny, with Australia's Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules 2024 now enforceable and the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) taking effect in December 2025. Having a CoC system in place ensures Porta can meet these obligations through a more streamlined compliance pathway, safeguarding market access and reducing risk.

What's Next for Us

Porta, in partnership with Group Energy, is committed to going further. We are currently in the process of getting more of our product range PEFC-certified, giving customers an even wider choice of responsibly sourced options. In addition, we are working towards extending certification to cover our newly acquired sawmill in Bombala, NSW, further strengthening Porta's ability to offer transparent, ethical, and high-quality timber products.

Conclusion

Chain of Custody certification is more than an operational requirement. It is a clear demonstration of core values. It ensures products are sourced from forests managed responsibly, without harm to ecosystems or communities, and without the use of forced labour. In a marketplace where sustainability and ethics drive consumer choices, CoC provides a competitive advantage and builds lasting trust with customers.

By keeping every link in the supply chain transparent and accountable, and expanding certification to more products and facilities, we not only meet today's market expectations, but also help shape a better, more sustainable future.
